DEPARTMENTAL HONORLOCK POLICY
Honorlock 1.3 is an AI-based Canvas proctoring system approved in at IU for proctoring exams and quizzes in online courses. It requires the student to have access to a computer with a camera and microphone and the Google Chrome browser installed to be able to take the test. Its AI system monitors the test-taking student and flags them for
- any use of additional devices,
- talking to other people,
- using unauthorized books, notes and other materials
- navigating to a different web page than the test taking page,
- opening files on the computer outside the browser.
It records the test taker, the room, and the computer screen. The recording is available afterwards for the instructor to review and can be used by other IU administrators in case the student is reported by the instructor for plagiarism. An Honorlock flag does not automatically mean that misconduct took place. The instructor will review the recording to make this determination. No third-party human reviewers monitor the test taker during the test.
In case a student objects to the use of Honorlock for testing purposes, alternative proctoring methods can be used. In particular, a verifiable proctoring facility can be used for the test, such as a proctoring center on any IU campus or a proctoring center at another university.
It is the student's responsibility to find such a facility and to secure their cooperation, including any incurring fees. The instructor and department chair need to approve the proctoring location. The student must get approval from both the instructor and the department chair at least 2 weeks before the assessment.
