Windows tutorial a) - general window manipulation, running an application
- From the Start menu, (bottom
left of the screen), follow on All Programs
- Accessories - Calculator.
- Notice that an icon with the application's name has appeared in the
toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
- This runs a program called Calculator
and opens a window with the same name.
- Move among all the windows on your screen by clicking on their icons
in the toolbar. Notice that you can also activate a window (bring it to the
front of the screen) by clicking anywhere inside it. Click on the Calculator's
icon again to activate this window.
- Move the window around on the screen by clicking on the top bar with
the left mouse button, holding the button down and moving the mouse.
- Minimize this window by clicking on the _ button on the top right
of the window.
- Restore the program's window by clicking on its icon in the toolbar
(bottom of the screen).
- Notice that the window manipulation operations are also available
from the buttom at the top-left corner of the window.
- Try a few basical operations in this program (add or multiply two
numbers).
- From the View menu, choose
the scientific option. Use some of the functions comming with this option.
- Close the application by clicking on the
x button on the top - right corner of the window. Remember this button,
because most windows can be closed the same way.
Windows tutorial b) - customizing your desktop
Desktop
- From the Start menu, choose
Control Panels.
- Click on Appearence and Themes, then on Display under pick a Control
Panel icon.
- Click on the Desktop page
on top of the window.
- Explore the list of background images and themes. When you have chosen
one, click on the Apply button at
the bottom of the page.
- Try the Tile - Center - Stretch
options under Position.
- At home, if you want to set your background to an existing image from
the hard drive, you can do that by clicking on the
Browse button. This calls a file dialog from which you can choose
the image file.
Screen Saver
- From the same control panel, click on the
Screen Saver page.
- Explore the list of screen savers. You can see the effect of each
of them by clicking on the Preview
button.
- Enable the screen saver that you chose with the same button -
Apply.
Desktop Scheme
- From the same control panel, click on Appearance
- Explore the available schemes and enable the one you like with the
same Apply button. Notice that you
can customize the scheme if you feel comfortable enough doing it.
- When you are done with this control panel, click on the
OK button to close it.
- Alternatively, you can click on the
x button on the top - right corner of the window.
- You can also customize the appearance of you desktop using the control
panel named Desktop Themes.
